Signature Lighting - 101 Collins Street Melbourne

The 101 Collins Street tower

101 Collins Street is a prestige office building in Melbourne’s CBD. The building’s owners wished to take advantage of the height and location of the building and make a signature statement to promote their asset.

Most architectural luminaires are not capable of providing the colour mixing that was required. Whilst theatrical fittings are capable of providing the desired colour control, these are not generally suitable for architectural applications, where fittings are required to operate for extended periods of time with minimal maintenance.

Stude Due CityColor

Studio Due City Color floodlights were selected to illuminate the major section of the mast. These provide remotely controllable full colour mixing and utilise a long-life standard architectural lamp, which is available from multiple suppliers. Lamp life, and ease of supply are critical issues in architectural projects where lamps are illuminated for many tens of hours each week

The lighting control system utilises the Dynet protocol from Dynalite, which integrates with the building’s existing management system, and provides DMX-512 control to the light fixtures for colour selection control.

Dynet System schematic

The Dynalite system includes many modules which can be included to build a fully integrated control network. It incorporates an integrated network compatible modem which allows full control and reporting of the system from a remote location.

Remote control not only provides ease of maintenance, it also makes initial commissioning of the system a lot easier. A large format feature such as this, can only be properly viewed from some distance away, and so the ability to remotely program events becomes quite critical. This system was programmed remotely from a building 4 blocks away, that offered good views of the mast.

The remote control capability also means that it is easy to cater for updates and special events. When the building’s owners requested that a new colour be installed for a festival being held in the city, the required changes were programmed, and installed directly from Lightmoves’ office.
