Melbourne's 2001 Centenary of Federation Arch entitled Tattersall's Federation Arch is described as "A Gift to the People of Australia" and a tribute to the achievements of Australia's people.
Built on images of 1901 and celebrating the development of our nation, the Arch reflects a palate of cultures working together towards a vision of our country's future. The design recognises that our achievements as a nation to date and our potential to realise our aims and aspirations for the future, is solely due to the contributions made by all our communities … not because of one person or one group in isolation.
The design is by FMSA Architects in conjunction with Michael Holt. Tattersall's provided $500,000 to fully fund the design and construction of the Arch as a major project in their ongoing program of supporting the community. Lightmoves Pty Ltd were contracted to add some dynamic lighting to the arch at night.
"We used 36 Geni 120 volt strobes modifying the electronics to 240 volt," explained technical director, Andrew Sherar. "The Geni strobes were housed in Versalux weather proof enclosures and were set to random. So the installation was turned on each night and it then ran itself until sunrise."
The lighting designer for the project was Nathan Thompson from The Flaming Beacon who is also working on the Federation Square project.
